Texture Extraction Tutorial

This tutorial is a step by step guide to extracting a texture using our system. It will guide you in the extraction of the roof texture from the image on the right.

In order to use our system, you must log on by using a supported social networking service or by creating a local account.

First, select the "New Extraction" option from the navigation menu. This will cause a popup window with a step by step wizard that will guide you through the extraction. The steps are listed below.
Step: About. This will start the texture extraction wizard. Select "Upload a new image" and then press the "Continue" button.
Step: Input Images.The system will allow you to upload your image along with some details. This includes a name to describe the image, the license the image is under (if creative-commons), and the attribution details of the image.
To add a file, press the "Choose File" button. A dialog box will open that allows you to select an image from your computer. Once you select the image, press the "Upload" button to upload the image. You should see the image on the screen, as shown to the right.
Step: Select Scale. This stage allows you to select the scale of the texture. On the right side of the screen is a slider which allows you to adjust the scale. As you move the slider, the image will be blurred. The goal is to select a scale where the desired texture appears to be a single color, but still distinguishable from its surroundings.
Here is an example of a scale that is too small (not blurred enough). As you can see in the magnification, details of the roof are still visible.
Here is an example of a scale that is too large (overly blurred). While the details of the roof are no longer visible, the boundary between the non-shadowed and shadowed roof is no longer discernible.
When a good scale is selected, the roof should be approximately a single color and the boundaries of the texture should be discernible. Often, a perfect scale is hard to find, thus you need to try to find the best scale possible. auto
Step: Start Point. You need to select the location of the texture within the image. This is done by simply clicking on a location with the desired texture. For the best result, try to click on the center of a large area of texture.
Once a location is selected, an indicator should appear.
Step: Tiles. A number of tiles that the system automatically extracted from the image will emerge. The desired texture should be recognizable within each of these tiles.
If a tile contains unwanted textures or details, it can be removed from the set by clicking on it. Once the tile is removed, it should appear grayed out.
Step: Synthesis. In this final stage, you are given a watermarked version of the final texture. If needed, you can go back to adjust any of the settings. Otherwise you can select the check-box if you want to make the image available to the public. Remember only choose this option if you have the rights to distribute the image. Finally, you must press the finish button to finalize the synthesis and obtain the texture without a watermark.
